DOVER- Senior forward Caleb Williams scored twice as the St. Thomas Saints coasted by the Kingswood Knights Friday afternoon 3-0.

It was a hot and humid day as the St. Thomas Aquinas mens soccer team took on the Kingswood Knights during their 4 p.m. matchup.

The Saints took their first lead of the game with 24:37 remaining in the first half. The goal happened off a free kick where captain Lance Thibodeau, put the ball into play and Williams finished by heading the ball into the net. Goaltender Brock Crowley posted a shutout, making Williams first goal the game winner.

Kingswood had one of their few scoring chances at 18:04 of the first half rifling two shots off the crossbar.

In our first four games we gave up a goal within the first five minutes. We talked about not shooting from the direct kicks. I explained to the kids that when you chip the ball over into the box, the defense is running the same way as the offense. Even if it hits the defender its probably going into the net, explained head coach, Scott Suleski. The result of the Williams goal was exactly what the team had been practicing days prior.

Overall Kingswood played a very physical game but St. Thomas dominated the majority of it with aggressive plays while putting the pressure on the Knights.

As the first half came to a close, Williams capitalized on a breakaway opportunity making the score 2-0 St. Thomas. It was one of our better performances of the season. We were finally able to move the ball around in a triangular formation, said Williams.

Being the first to strike seemed to give St. Thomas the momentum that they needed. It was good that we finally scored first. When you score first you can take control of the game and its an easier ride to the end, said Williams.

Kingswood had another scoring chance at 29:15 of the second half as they hit the crossbar once again. Net-minder Crowley had to make some crucial saves throughout the game, giving his team the best chance of victory. The Knights' biggest weakness was their incapability to capitalize on key opportunities. St. Thomas outplayed the Knights and ultimately were able to communicate and put shots in the back of the net.

Williams was a key factor in the Saints win and his constant hustle paid off. Hes a hustler all the time. Caleb is a unique type of player. Hell get back no matter how exhausted he is, said assistant coach, Dave Salvacion.

I want to be a leading scorer on this team and lead them into the playoffs, which is our main goal. I just want the momentum going forward. I dont care about scoring as long as the team wins, said Williams.

The final goal occurred when Senior co-captain Lance Thibodeau added on an insurance goal as the clock ticked down in the final minutes of the game. The goal came off a great shot by Thibodeau through traffic and passed a sprawling Kingswood goalie. St. Thomas is now 2-3 for the season. The Saints next matchup is against Merrimack Valley on Tuesday, September 13th.
